MUFULIRA- Copperbelt Province – President Hakainde Hichilema has called on residents of Mufulira District to renew the UPND’s mandate in the August 13 general election, saying another term in office would enable his government to consolidate development gains, expand employment opportunities and complete key infrastructure projects across the district.
Addressing a campaign rally in Mufulira, President Hichilema said the UPND government had delivered on major campaign commitments since assuming office, citing the introduction of free education, increased social protection programmes and economic reforms aimed at improving the lives of Zambians.
The President said free education, now backed by law, had enabled more than 2.5 million children to access schooling, removing financial barriers that had previously kept many learners out of classrooms.
He also highlighted the increase in the Social Cash Transfer programme from K180 to K1,000 and the implementation of the Cash for Work initiative as part of government efforts to support vulnerable households while creating community-based employment.
President Hichilema assured residents that a second UPND term would accelerate the completion of the Mufulira-Ndola Road, other township roads and the Mufulira District Hospital, projects he said were critical to improving transport, healthcare and economic activity in the district.
On employment, the Head of State said his government would continue creating more opportunities for young people, particularly through the mining sector. He disclosed that government would engage Mopani Copper Mines and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to increase contracts awarded to Zambian-owned businesses, especially youth-led enterprises.
He further pledged to work with the two mining companies to provide local communities with access to mine dump sites, saying the initiative would create additional economic opportunities for residents.
President Hichilema acknowledged the water supply challenges affecting Mufulira and assured residents that government would address the crisis through long-term interventions. He also announced plans to establish a milling plant near the border to support local economic growth and improve value addition in the agricultural sector.
The President further pledged to expand access to boarding schools and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to resolving outstanding pension concerns to ensure beneficiaries receive the money owed to them.
President Hichilema urged voters to reject violence and preserve the country’s peace, saying democracy should be exercised through the ballot box. He accused previous administrations of leaving the country with unsustainable debt and challenged residents not to reverse the progress made under the current government.
He also alleged that past leadership had contributed to the decline of the Copperbelt’s mining sector and said his administration was focused on restoring productivity, attracting investment and ensuring that mining benefits translated into jobs and business opportunities for Zambians.
The President concluded by urging the people of Mufulira to vote for the UPND and its candidates, saying another term would allow government to complete ongoing projects and deliver inclusive development across the district.
