ARMED SUSPECTED PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT SHOT DEAD AT KAFUE CHECKPOINT

An armed suspected prohibited immigrant has been shot dead after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers at the Kafue Security Checkpoint.

The incident occurred at about 08:30 hours today during a routine immigration operation after officers intercepted the suspect and began verifying a National Registration Card suspected to be fraudulent.

This is according to a joint statement issued by Police spokesperson GODFREY CHILABI and Department of Immigration Chief Public Relations Officer NAMATI H. NSHINKA.

The statement says the suspect fled after officers discovered he was armed and opened fire on an Immigration Officer who was pursuing him.

It says the suspect continued firing as he fled, posing a threat to law enforcement officers and members of the public.

A police officer confronted the suspect about 200 metres from the checkpoint and fatally wounded him. No police officer, Immigration officer or member of the public was injured during the incident.

The statement says a firearm loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the deceased.

Preliminary investigations indicate that four rounds were fired, while nine live rounds were recovered from the scene and secured as exhibits.

The body has been taken to Kafue General Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicate the deceased is believed to be the same individual who escaped from lawful custody after being apprehended by Immigration officers on March 19 this year.

The statement adds that authorities are still working to establish the suspect's identity and nationality.

The recovered National Registration Card is suspected to be fraudulent, and forensic examinations are underway.

The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into the shooting, while the Department of Immigration is conducting separate investigations into the immigration aspects of the case.
